The enchanting Hilma af Klint
I only heard about the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) a few months ago, but find myself mesmerised by both her fascinating life and her extraordinary artworks. Some argue, in contradiction to traditional art history, she could be the first Abstract artists, before Kandinsky and Mondrian. Her work explores many facets of spirituality. Highly recommend reading The Guardian article about her work and life in Hilma af Klint: a painter possessed.
I particularly like the use of colours and symbols in her work and have started exploring these intuitive techniques in small watercolour studies of my own.
In late December I have tickets for the exhibition at City Gallery which I’m very excited about. While wonderful to see her work online and in books to see the works close up, as well as the scale of the large pieces, is bound to be magical.
